One of the coolest things you can do if you own an Android is to root it, tweak it and ultimately flash various custom Roms. However, many of us don’t want to root our phones, avoiding the risk of potentially bricking the device. Does that mean your Android can’t be as awesome? Absolutely not, my friend.
Android has almost limitless functionality when rooted, but that doesn’t mean most of the features you can access when rooted, don’t have their alternative methods for nonrooted peeps.
As said before, tweaking your OS is one of the most widely-knows uses of a root. After reading this post, you’ll know how to do exactly that. Without root.
Here’s how you can run Linux on your Android Smartphone Without Root:
1. First up, you need to download an application called Debian NoRoot from the PlayStore. It’s basically an operating system based on Linux that still receives security updates and lets you install free open source software like GIMP. You can even install programs through its Advanced Package Tool.
2. After you’ve downloaded and installed Debian NoRoot, open it. It should now install some packages, after which it will give you a desktop like an interface.
3. The next step is to click (double tap) on the icon on the desktop interface that says Root Terminal. Hit the back key on your device to bring the on-screen keyboard up. Use the following codes:
apt-get update ( To make sure the version of Debian Wheezy that’s running on your Droid is up to date)
apt-get install (followed by the code for the software you want to install)
For example, apt-get install gimp( To install an image editing software)
apt-get install Iceweasel ( To install a FireFox like the browser)
The list is endless, including tools and games too.
That’s it, your Android device can be turned into a tiny little, but fully functional Linux device with just the tap on an icon that rests in your Android app drawer. Launch Debian NoRoot and operate Linux on Android, that too, without root.
Are you facing any problems while setting up Linux on your Android device? Do you have an alternate method? Let us know through the comments.
